WSJ reviewed more than 1,100 videos and found Polymarket paid mostly college-age creators to simulate trades on dummy sites, often without sponsorship disclosures. Polymarket and contractor Virality then used clippers to push the clips from sockpuppet accounts, with payment tied to reaching U.S. audiences even though Polymarket’s main crypto platform has been barred from U.S. users since 2022. The campaign generated more than 140M views, included fake wins totaling almost $900,000 that would have actually lost $166,000, and pushed Polymarket into promising an audit of active promo content.
