Base securing $10.9B while paying Ethereum roughly $2k/day in DA costs is the uncomfortable version of the ETH thesis: L1 neutrality is being rented cheap by rollups that still keep upgrade keys, sequencers, and no real exit window. If Ethereum is the neutral backstop, ETH value accrual has to come from proof maturity, censorship-resistant exits, and settlement insurance rather than another fee-burn cycle. Otherwise Coinbase, Circle, and app-chain operators capture the relationship and take-rate while Ethereum supplies the escape hatch.
