The change affects USDT issued on so‑called legacy blockchains, including Omni Layer, Bitcoin Cash SLP, Kusama, EOS, and Algorand, which Tether had earlier scheduled to fully freeze and exclude from redemptions starting September 1, 2025. After community criticism and concerns about users being stranded with immovable tokens, Tether abandoned the freeze plan via an August 29 update and adopted the new unsupported status. In practical terms, “unsupported” means Tether will no longer issue new USDT, redeem USDT for fiat, or otherwise provide operational support on these chains, but existing tokens will continue to move between wallets at the protocol level. Tether’s own protocol page now states it is no longer obligated to redeem Tether tokens on Omni Layer, Bitcoin Cash SLP, Kusama, EOS, and Algorand, keeping related details only for historical reference. The company frames the shift as part of a broader resource reallocation toward higher‑volume, more scalable ecosystems and Layer‑2 solutions, while the unsupported designation is intended to reduce reputational risk relative to a permanent freeze and avoid directly locking user funds. For holders, the key implication is counterparty: USDT on these legacy networks will still exist and be transferable, but with no redemption commitment or active support from Tether, users largely depend on third‑party exchanges or bridges—if any remain—to move value into supported networks. This policy evolution highlights both the centralization trade‑offs of major stablecoins and the lifecycle risk of assets issued on experimental or low‑adoption chains. Earlier, Tether had started phasing out mints on Omni, SLP, and Kusama in 2023 and on EOS and Algorand in 2024, signaling that liquidity and developer activity were concentrating elsewhere. The reversal from an outright freeze to unsupported status underscores how user and developer feedback—particularly from smaller ecosystems—can influence issuer behavior, but it also draws a line under Tether’s strategic focus: the firm is prioritizing chains such as Ethereum, Tron, Solana, and certain Layer‑2s, while legacy networks lose issuer guarantees and institutional support.46:T995,Tether has revised its previously announced plan to hard-freeze USDT on several older, low-usage networks and will instead classify those tokens as “unsupported” while allowing them to remain technically transferable on-chain. The critique centers on Bullish’s deep ties to Block.one and the controversial EOS initial coin offering (ICO), which raised roughly $4 billion from 2017–2018 but later led to regulatory penalties and widespread community allegations of overpromising, under-delivery, and governance failures. Bullish was launched by Block.one figures including Brendan Blumer and Brock Pierce as an institutional-focused crypto exchange reportedly funded with billions in digital assets originally associated with the EOS raise, and later acquired CoinDesk from Digital Currency Group in a cash-and-stock deal. As Bullish moved toward a U.S. listing—filing an F‑1 registration statement with the SEC that explicitly warns investors that “perceived or actual conflicts of interest” involving CoinDesk could harm its reputation—critics argued that favorable or softened coverage of Bullish and its principals at a prominent industry publication presents a structural conflict. They also point to ongoing red flags around Bullish itself, including questions about organic trading activity, suspicions of wash trading on relatively low-volume pairs, and a lack of transparent, sustainable cash-flow generation from core exchange operations, concerns that have been raised in industry commentary rather than definitively resolved by public financial disclosures. The controversy matters for two reasons. First, it underscores the persistent governance and accountability questions around the EOS/Block.one capital stack: billions raised from token investors have been recycled into new enterprises such as Bullish, while EOS network participants have long complained about value not flowing back to them. Second, it highlights broader worries about editorial independence and conflicts of interest in crypto media, where trading venues, token issuers, and venture funds often own or sponsor key news outlets. The situation around Bullish and CoinDesk—now explicitly flagged as a risk factor in Bullish’s IPO filings—is a test case for whether crypto media can credibly cover its owners and their ecosystems while those same owners seek public-market capital and reputational reset. Tether describes these networks as having seen a significant decline in circulating USD₮ volume over the past two years and says the move will allow the company to reallocate resources toward blockchains with higher usage, better scalability, and more active developer communities, including major L1s and Layer 2 solutions such as the Lightning Network. The decision continues a phased withdrawal that began when Tether halted new USDT minting on some of these chains between 2023 and mid‑2024. Under the plan, USDT holders on Omni, Bitcoin Cash SLP, Kusama, EOS, and Algorand are urged to redeem or migrate their tokens before the September 2025 cutoff. Tether customers can redeem directly with Tether or request issuance on a supported chain in line with its terms of service, while non‑customers are expected to use exchanges or other service providers to move their balances to still‑supported networks. After the cutoff date, Tether will no longer provide redemptions on these blockchains and has stated in its initial communication that remaining tokens would be frozen, effectively rendering them unusable, although a later transition update in August 2025 revised this to ending official support while leaving smart contracts unfrozen for transfers. For the broader market, the change underscores Tether’s shift away from underused or aging infrastructure toward ecosystems with stronger demand and technical capabilities, and it highlights the dependence of stablecoin holders on issuer support decisions at the blockchain level.4a:T709,Tether has announced that it will discontinue USD₮ (USDT) redemptions and new issuance on five legacy blockchains—Omni Layer, Bitcoin Cash SLP, Kusama, EOS, and Algorand—effective 1 September 2025, as part of a strategic infrastructure review. Vaulta says the transition is a brand and market-positioning change rather than a protocol reset: the network keeps the same chain, the swap is described as fee-free, and the token’s supply and other tokenomics are unchanged. The strategic reason for the rebrand is a shift away from EOS’s original identity as a general-purpose smart contract platform toward a Web3 banking focus. Vaulta has framed the new direction around financial-use cases such as wealth management, consumer payments, portfolio investment, and insurance, while coordinating the transition with major exchanges and wallet providers to support holders during the migration period. The story matters because EOS was once one of the largest crypto projects by fundraising and market attention, so the rebrand is a high-profile attempt to refresh the project’s narrative and recover relevance. Market coverage around the announcement also suggested traders viewed the swap as a catalyst, with EOS price action strengthening ahead of the transition as the ecosystem prepared for the new $A token.4c:T4c9,EOS is in the middle of a formal rebrand to Vaulta, with its native token ticker changing from EOS to A and a *1:1 swap planned to begin on May 14, 2025.
