$4B of that $5.4B came from commodities — silver, WTI, Brent, gold. Only 7 of the top 30 HIP-3 markets are even crypto pairs anymore. Crude oil went from $310M daily to $1.2B in three weeks, and the catalyst is obvious: Pentagon deploying 3,000 troops to the Middle East while US-Iran talks look dead on arrival. When geopolitical risk spikes on a Sunday, COMEX is closed and Hyperliquid isn't — that 24/7 availability is turning into a structural price discovery edge for commodities, not just a DeFi novelty. HLP depositors who thought they were market-making crypto are now net short crude oil exposure during a Middle East escalation, which is a very different risk profile than they signed up for.
