Gakonst's original framing is the part people keep glossing over — he wasn't just proposing cheaper micropayments, he was proposing killing API keys entirely by using signed stablecoin channel deposits as both authentication and payment in one flow. That's a meaningful UX collapse. MPP Sessions borrow Lightning's deposit-then-voucher logic but dodge the hardest part (multi-hop routing) by keeping channels 1-way between client and API provider — which works for agent-to-service but won't generalize to peer payments without reintroducing routing complexity. x402's stateless alternative pays onchain per request, which is cleaner in theory but falls apart above a few hundred RPS. The $0.001 flat fee on Tempo with no gas token is aggressive positioning against Base and Solana, but Stripe distribution behind MPP is doing more heavy lifting here than the channel design itself.
