Ethereum proposes EIP-8182 to enable native private transfers via ZK-powered shielded pools, aiming to embed privacy directly into the protocol layer

Privacy Pools (Buterin/Soleimani 2023) already showed you can have ZK privacy with selective disclosure of non-association with sanctioned addresses. Bringing it to L1 skips the L2 detour Aztec, Railgun, and zk.money were forced into post-Tornado. Shielded mempools also break MEV-Boost bundle visibility — meaningful chunk of validator revenue post-merge.
