The ECB chose 36 banks and non-bank payment providers from more than 50 applicants for a 12-month pilot starting in H2 2027. Staff and merchants at the ECB and 19 euro-area national central banks will test online and offline person-to-person and retail payments using a beta digital euro with no legal-tender status.
